Coincidence

The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the Lord.

Believe in coincidence? Luck? Chance? In reality, it doesn’t exist. Every detail of every day has been set in motion by God. If He cares enough to be involved in the small details, don’t you think He’ll provide for you if you follow His guidance?

Prime Time

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,
observing the wicked and the good.
Proverbs 15:3

If your life were filmed every day and broadcast each evening, would you want others to to see it?

satisfaction

The slacker craves, yet has nothing,
but the diligent is fully satisfied.
Proverbs 13:4

Diligent work combines working harder and working smarter, meaning one is effective in their work, and there is nothing more satisfying than a job well done. Plus, you’ll be paid for your work!

Revelation

As shameful conduct is pleasure for a fool,
so wisdom is for a man of understanding.
Proverbs 9:22

A person will reveal their true self by what they are drawn to. What do the things you spend your time and money doing say about you?

Libel

The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
When there are many words, sin is unavoidable,
but the one who controls his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:18-19

Lying lips lead to loose words, which lead to libel!

Highways & Byways

Listen, my sons, to a father’s discipline,
and pay attention so that you may gain understanding,
for I am giving you good instruction.
Don’t abandon my teaching.
When I was a son with my father,
tender and precious to my mother,
he taught me and said:
“Your heart must hold on to my words.
Keep my commands and live.
Get wisdom, get understanding;
don’t forget or turn away from the words of my mouth.
Don’t abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you;
love her,  and she will guard you.
Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.
And whatever else you get, get understanding.
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
if you embrace her, she will honor you.
She will place a garland of grace on your head;
she will give you a crown of beauty.”
Proverbs 4:1-9

Knowledge may help you design and build a car, but wisdom allows you to drive it where you want to go, successfully navigating streets, stop signs, and  pedestrians, so you can drive up the on ramp and cruise down the highway of life to your destination!

Keys to success

Maintain your competence and discretion.
My son, don’t lose sight of them.
They will be life for you
and adornment  for your neck.
Then you will go safely on your way;
your foot will not stumble.
When you lie  down, you will not be afraid;
you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.
Proversb 3:21-24

Competence equals skill and discretion means knowing what to say & when to say it. Both are keys to success in life!

The road not taken

It will rescue you from a forbidden woman,
from a stranger  with her flattering talk,
who abandons the companion of her youth
and forgets the covenant of her God;
for her house sinks down to death
and her ways to the land of the departed spirits.
None return who go to her;
none reach the paths of life.
Proverbs 2:16-19

In The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost wrote about taking the road less travelled, and it “made all the difference.” In another area of the Bible, the statement is made that the path to destruction is wide, but the way to salvation is narrow. Instead of following the crowds, maybe you should take the road less travelled, for it can make all the difference!

Mutually beneficial

She selects wool and flax
and works with willing hands.
She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from far away.
She rises while it is still night
and provides food for her household
and portions  for her female servants.
She evaluates a field and buys it;
she plants a vineyard with her earnings.
She draws on her strength
and reveals that her arms are strong.
She sees that her profits are good,
and her lamp never goes out at night.
She extends her hands to the spinning staff,
and her hands hold the spindle.
Her hands reach  out to the poor,
and she extends her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid for her household when it snows,
for all in her household are doubly clothed.
She makes her own bed coverings;
her clothing is fine linen  and purple.
Her husband is known at the city gates,
where he sits among the elders of the land.

Have you ever considered Scripture confirms the saying, “Behind every good man is an even better woman?” A successful marriage requires two individuals making a concerted commitment to each other, working for the other’s good!

trust issues

Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
Don’t add to His words,
or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar.

Is it really trust if you feel you have to add to God's words?

A person’s pride will humble him,

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the way to gain favor isn't by being arrogant!

Fugitives

A man burdened by bloodguilt 

will be a fugitive until death.

There are some crimes that follow a person their entire life; they are unforgivable this side of eternity.  Fortunately, there is one who can totally forgive for all of time! Have you asked for forgiveness?

boasting

Don’t boast about tomorrow,

Ever heard the expression, “It’s not bragging if it’s true?” When was the last time you knew the future? There is One who does, and you can trust in Him!

Like a flitting sparrow or a fluttering swallow,

If you live with integrity, you don’t have to worry about what people say about you behind your back!

Friends

Remove impurities from silver,
and a vessel will be produced  for a silversmith.
 Remove the wicked from the king’s presence,
and his throne will be established in righteousness.

Want to know the character of a man? Look at his circle of friends.

Frugality

Don’t be one of those who enter agreements,
who put up security for loans.
If you have no money to pay,
even your bed will be taken from under you.
Proverbs 22:26-7

In other words, if you spend more than you have, not only will you not need a wallet or payers, but you may not have a bed to sleep in, either!

Manners

Better to live in a wilderness
than with a nagging and hot-tempered wife.
Proverbs 21:19

We’ve been reading a book on manners with my kids, and it teaches them to ask two questions as they interact with others. “Are others happy I am here?” And, “Amp happy I am here?” Ladies and gentlemen, those are two good questions for anyone to ask themselves in any social situation!

Skilled labor

It is honorable for a man to resolve a dispute,
but any fool can get himself into a quarrel.
Proverbs 20:3

Just as it takes more skil and effort to build something than it does to tear it down,  tt take requires more effort and skill to settle disagreements than to provoke them.

casting lots

The first to state his case seems right
until another comes and cross-examines him.
Casting the lot  ends quarrels
and separates powerful opponents.
Proverbs 18:17-18

In ancient Judaism, casting lots meant seeking an answer from the Lord, before whom everyone was equal. When two opponents could not solve their problem, they sought an outside authority. Everyone has problems and conflicts today. Are you seeking an objective higher power for answers?

Honest balances and scales are the Lord’s;
all the weights in the bag  are His concern.

optimal usage

The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The hope of the righteous is joy,
but the expectation of the wicked comes to nothing.
The way of the Lord is a stronghold for the honorable,
but destruction awaits the malicious.
The righteous will never be shaken,
but the wicked will not remain on the earth.

I once watched an optimizing saw in a furniture factory being fed long boards by workers. The board would move down the rollers, scanned by lasers, the cut into different size lengths based on optimal usage sections without knots, gouges, etc...). To the untrained eye, it looked like boards being cut randomly. As the boards left the saw and moved down the conveyor, mechanical arms swiftly pushed unusable pieces off into a side bin where they would be ground into sawdust. The other pieces? They moved on, and were made into different types of furniture, sanded, stained, and shipped out on trucks to be used and enjoyed. Our lives are the same way. Those who fear God and live with integrity are shaped and used for good, but the wicked come to swift and destructive ends!

Pruning Season

The one who corrects a mocker
will bring dishonor on himself;
the one who rebukes a wicked man will get hurt.
Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;
rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still;
teach a righteous man, and he will learn more.
Proverbs 9:7-9

I prune and trim the plants & trees around my house to make them healthier, more lush, and extend their lifespan. Like plants and trees, those who are wise and upright in character accept instruction, growing in the process, while the foolish and wicked only become worse.

Game of Thrones

Concerning the "forbidden woman:"
Now, my sons, listen to me,
and pay attention to the words of my mouth.
Don’t let your heart turn aside to her ways;
don’t stray onto her paths.
For she has brought many down to death;
her victims are countless.
Her house is the road to Sheol,
descending to the chambers of death.
Proverbs 7:24-27

I don't know if it's said in the series, but in the book "Game of Thrones," there's a line repeated throughout the work: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or die." Playing with temptation is exactly the same.

A worthless person,  a wicked man
goes around speaking dishonestly,
winking  his eyes, signaling with his feet,
and gesturing with his fingers.
He always plots evil  with perversity in his heart—
he stirs up trouble.

Disciplinary measures

Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son,
and do not loathe His discipline;
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves,
just as a father, the son he delights in.

Through discipline, football teams win championships. Through discipline, students ace tests. Through discipline, armies win wars. The Lord's Discipline means you're on the path of salvation!

and understanding will guard you,

Discretionary income is money you are free to decide how to spend;  it's not tied up to pay bills, repairs, or necessities. Following wisdom builds up knowledge that leads to understanding, allowing you to be free to make your own decisions; decisions that lead to the good life for yourself and others!

she raises her voice in the public squares.
She cries out above  the commotion;
she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:
“How long, foolish ones, will you love ignorance?
How long will you mockers  enjoy mocking
and you fools hate knowledge?
If you respond to my warning,

Since I called out and you refused,
extended my hand and no one paid attention,
since you neglected all my counsel

If a farmer plants wheat, he harvests wheat. Sow ignorance by ignoring wisdom, and you'll harvest stupidity.

When spouses realize marriage is a 100%/100% giving towards each other relationship, they are a unified team, their trust in one another becomes unshakable!

Have you ever tried to put together Ikea furniture without reading the instructions? Life is similar; you might get it together without reading the instructions, but it's a lot more likely you'll make a mess! Read your Bible!

Use it up!

A proverb in the mouth of a fool
is like lame legs that hang limp.

Wisdom is meant to be practical and useful. So, how are you putting it to use?

Delivery!

The man who boasts about a gift that does not exist
is like clouds and wind without rain.

Don't promise what you cannot deliver!

and by understanding it is established;
 by knowledge the rooms are filled

and a man of knowledge enhances his might,

and in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Conduct yourself accordingly

Grandchildren are the crown of the elderly,
and the pride of sons is their fathers.

If grandchildren are the joy of grandparents, and parents are the object of children's attention, shouldn't we act so that we make both groups proud? Conduct yourself accordingly!

Avoidance issues

A slacker’s way is like a thorny hedge,
but the path of the upright is a highway.
Proerbs14:9

Some people work harder at avoiding work than they would if they settled into a job!

Make a mess!

Where there are no oxen, the feeding trough is empty,
but an abundant harvest comes
through the strength of an ox.
Proverbs 14:4

Success comes through hard work, and hard work can get a little messy at times. Don't be afraid to make a mess in the journey to success!

Take a walk

The one who walks with the wise will become wise,
but a companion of fools will suffer harm.
Proverbs 13:20

The next time someone tells you to "take a walk," maybe you should follow their advice and walk with a different group!

Oink Oink

A beautiful woman who rejects good sense
is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.
Proverbs 11:22

You can clean one up, put lipstick and jewelry on it, but in the end, a pig is still a pig!

Cut it out!

The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom,
but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
The lips of the righteous know what is appropriate,
but the mouth of the wicked, only what is perverse.
Proverbs 10:31-32

If you are known for saying the wrong things, cut it out and begin saying the right things!

Fast food

Wisdom has built her house;
she has carved out her seven pillars.
She has prepared her meat;  she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
She has sent out her female servants;
she calls out from the highest points of the city:
“Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!”
To the one who lacks sense,  she says,
“Come, eat my bread,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
Leave inexperience behind, and you will live;
pursue the way of understanding.
Proverbs 9:1-6

Would you rather have fast food, or a Thanksgiving feast? Inexperience is cheap and quick, but will will never satisfy, while the pursuit of wisdom is a never-ending banquet of delicacies.

from the beginning, before the earth began.

when there were no watery depths
and no springs filled with water.
I was delivered
before the mountains and hills were established,

Wisdom is often known as common sense, and it's been around a long time!. It is called "common" because it's everywhere and available to everyone, but you have to look in the right places to find it!

family ties

My son, obey my words,
and treasure my commands.
Keep my commands and live;
protect my teachings
as the pupil of your eye.
Tie them to your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call understanding your relative.
She will keep you from a forbidden woman,

While you can't choose your family members, you can make wise choices based on understanding!

Ants in your pants!

Go to the ant,  you slacker!
Observe its ways and become wise.
Without leader, administrator, or ruler,
it prepares its provisions in summer;
it gathers its food during harvest.
How long will you stay in bed, you slacker?
When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to rest,
and your poverty will come like a robber,
your need, like a bandit.

Want success? Work like you have ants in your pants!

Trapped!

A wicked man’s iniquities entrap him;
he is entangled in the ropes of his own sin.
He will die because there is no discipline,
and be lost because of his great stupidity.

If we are the product of our decisions, we want to make wise ones so we're not trapped by them!

Watch where you step!

The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
shining brighter and brighter until midday.
But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;
they don’t know what makes them stumble.

I think we would all agree it's easier to hike a trail in the daytime than at night!

giving credit

Honor the Lord with your possessions
and with the first produce of your entire harvest;
then your barns will be completely filled,
and your vats will overflow with new wine.
Proverbs 3:9-10

Give credit where credit is due, and success will follow.

Guardrails

For the Lord gives wisdom;
from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He stores up success for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity
so that He may guard the paths of justice
and protect the way of His loyal followers.

Integrity isn't just the road to success; it is also the guardrails that keep you on the road!

Give and Take

My son, if sinners entice you,
don’t be persuaded.
If they say—“Come with us!
Let’s set an ambush  and kill someone.
Let’s attack some innocent person  just for fun!
Let’s swallow them alive,  like Sheol,
still healthy as they go down to the Pit.
 We’ll find all kinds of valuable property
and fill our houses with plunder.
Throw in your lot with us,
and we’ll all share our money” —
my son, don’t travel that road with them
or set foot on their path,
because their feet run toward trouble
and they hurry to commit murder.
It is foolish to spread a net
where any bird can see it,
but they set an ambush to kill themselves;
they attack their own lives.
Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly;
it takes the lives of those who receive it.

If it's true that you get back what you give, then those who plan to take will end up with less than they  began with!

We spend a lot of time asking, "Where?": "Where did it all start?"; ""Where is it going?"; "Where will it end?" Maybe we should start asking, "Who?": "Who started it?"; "Who made this mess?"; "Who will clean it up?"  Do you know?

Stirring the pot

An angry man stirs up conflict,
and a hot-tempered man  increases rebellion.
Proverbs 29:22

Don't stir the pot if you don't want to eat the soup!

One who rebukes a person will later find more favor
than one who flatters  with his tongue.
Proverbs 28:23

Honesty is always the best policy!

Excuses, excuses

The slacker says, “There’s a lion in the road—
a lion in the public square!”
A door turns on its hinges,
and a slacker, on his bed.
The slacker buries his hand in the bowl;
he is too weary to bring it to his mouth.
In his own eyes, a slacker is wiser
than seven men who can answer sensibly.
Proverbs 26:13-16

Slackers are full of excuses, and we all know what excuses are like!

Saving

Precious treasure and oil are in the dwelling of a wise person,
but a foolish man consumes them.
Proverbs 21:20

The wise save, adding wealth to their home, while the foolish spend & consume, decreasing their value.

Overdrawn

A fool’s lips lead to strife,
and his mouth provokes a beating.
A fool’s mouth is his devastation,
and his lips are a trap for his life.
Proverbs 18:6-7

When I was was a child, my mom used to say, "Don't let your mouth write checks your body can't cash!" whenever I was a smartaleck. I may not have known what a checking account was, but did I understand the principle of being overdrawn! Needless to say, there is no overdraft protection for a smart mouth!

Holding your tongue

 The intelligent person restrains his words,
and one who keeps a cool head
is a man of understanding.
Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent,
discerning when he seals his lips.

Sometimes intelligence is shown by keeping silent!

speaking in tongues

The reflections of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
Proverbs 16:1

We chose our words much more carefully when we realize they carry so much authority. So, what are you saying?

contagious

 Bright eyes cheer the heart;
good news strengthens  the bones.
Proverbs 14:30

Positivity is contagious; try catching some today!

Go take a walk

Whoever lives with integrity fears the Lord,
but the one who is devious in his ways despises Him.
Proverbs 14:2

If you're going to talk the talk, you better walk the walk!

Mockingbird

A wise son responds to his father’s discipline,
but a mocker doesn’t listen to rebuke.
Proverbs 13:1

Mockingbirds may sound pretty, but they cannot sing their own unique song. As a mockingbird sings other bird's songs repeatedly, so a mocker endlessly repeats learning the same lesson over and over, and is never free to flourish.

Forrest Gump

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but one who hates correction is stupid
Proverbs 12:1

As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does," and it appears ignoring correction is, well, stupid.

Trouble

The one who searches for what is good  finds favor,
but if someone looks for trouble, it will come to him.
Prov 11:27

Don't go looking for trouble; you'll find more than you want!

tempted

The woman Folly is rowdy;
she is gullible and knows nothing.
She sits by the doorway of her house,
on a seat at the highest point of the city,
calling to those who pass by,
who go straight ahead on their paths:
“Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!”
To the one who lacks sense, she says,
“Stolen water is sweet,
and bread eaten secretly is tasty!”
But he doesn’t know that the departed spirits are there,
that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
Prov 9:13-18

Temptation isn't passive; it calls to everyone, claiming to hold happiness. But in the end, it leads to destruction.

swimming upstream

Happy is a man who finds wisdom
and who acquires understanding,
 for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.
She is more precious than jewels;
nothing you desire compares with her.
Long life  is in her right hand;
in her left, riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant,
and all her paths, peaceful.
She is a tree of life  to those who embrace her,
and those who hold on to her are happy.

Knowledge and information fly at us all day long, often bringing anxiety. Life is a lot like swimming upstream, and wisdom allows you to move through it like a salmon!

teachability

The proverbs of Solomon  son of David, king of Israel:
For learning what wisdom and discipline are;
for understanding insightful sayings;
for receiving wise instruction
in righteousness, justice, and integrity;
for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced,
knowledge and discretion  to a young man—
a wise man will listen and increase his learning,
and a discerning man will obtain guidance—
for understanding a proverb or a parable,
the words of the wise, and their riddles.
Proverbs 1:1-6

Adults, are you passing down wisdom to the next generation? Youth, are you listening?  Teachability will take you a long way when you're young, and give you something to pass down when you're older.

toot toot

If you have been foolish by exalting yourself
or if you’ve been scheming,
put your hand over your mouth.
For the churning of milk produces butter,
and twisting a nose draws blood,
and stirring up anger produces strife.

When you toot your own horn, others don't enjoy the music!

oil & water

An unjust man is detestable to the righteous,
and one whose way is upright
is detestable to the wicked.

Behind Every Good Man

and loving instruction  is on her tongue.
She watches over the activities of her household
and is never idle.

Her husband also praises her:
"Many women  are capable,
but you surpass them all!”
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,
but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Give her the reward of her labor,
and let her works praise her at the city gates.

the seed and the soils

 My name is Trey Holmes. My wife is a musician, and our home is full of singing and music almost all the time. I however, am not a musician, nor can I sing, but I do it enjoy it. Having three kiddos under six, a lot of the songs are nursery rhymes and other little diddies. A lot of my time is spent reliving my own childhood as we read stories and sing songs. One character we’ve recently rediscovered is a guy named John Chapman. You don’t know who he is? Maybe you know him by his nickname, Johnny Appleseed. Oh yeah, the lightbulbs just went off! Johnny Appleseed was originally born in Massachusetts, but he would travel West when he came of age. He really did spread apple seeds wherever he went, but he did so in orchards, which he would start and then leave a neighbor to tend while he returned every few years for his share of the profits from the trees and produce. He died in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and if you ever happened to be in Leominster, MA, or Fort Wayne, IN, you can visit his birthplace, see his gravestone, play in Johnny Appleseed park, and watch the minor league baseball team, the Tincaps as they play. John Chapman the nurseryman wove himself into American folklore as he travelled about, and grew quite famous. That tends to happen when someone is doing work that people appreciate. As a matter of fact, Jesus gained quite a following as he travelled around the area of Galilee, preaching the word of God, healing the sick, and performing miracles. He became so popular that he didn’t need to travel- the crowds came to him by the thousands. Let’s look in Luke chapter 8 to see one particular time Jesus drew a crowd, and what he had to say.

When we pick up in verse 4, Jesus had a large crowd around him. We know from Mark’s gospel that Jesus was by the sea of Galilee, and the crowd was so large that he had to climb in a boat and go out on the lake for the crowd to hear him.  Along with the crowds, a close group of his followers (including the 12 disciples were with him), and they probably rowed him out far enough for Him to be seen and heard by the crowd. As the boat stopped and one of the disciples threw out an anchor, the crowd hushed, and he began to tell the following parable. “A farmer goes out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell on the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprean up, it withered, since it lacked moisture. Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown.”

When we think of agriculture today, we think of big tractors and equipment, seedbed prep, exact measurements, fertilizer, and specially selected seed to produce the highest yield. But the farmer of Jesus’ day would have had a much simpler setup. He would have walked along the area covering his field with a loose bag slung over his shoulder, rhythmically throwing handfuls of seed out as he walked up and down the field. (Perhaps it was planting season as Jesus taught the crowd, and they watched farmers in the distance as he spoke.) They wouldn’t have needed the visual, though. Most of them lived as farmers and farm workers, and would place themselves right in the story. They would know the land they lived in and probably recalled memories of sowing seed, watching it bounce on hard paths and eaten by birds. They would feel the coolness of the breeze on their sweaty brow as the chopped weeds. Their nostrils would recognize the smell of the freshly plowed soil as they walked over it. The bright green of the early sprouts would be seen in their mind’s eye, and the dry stalks as it died in rocky areas. But they would also know the camaraderie of men who work hard together during harvest. Perhaps they rubbed their lower back, remembering sore muscles and aching backs from sleeping on threshing floors. The feeling of accomplishment as the harvest was finished, and they celebrated Firstfuits.

There was one thing they wouldn’t know, though- what it was like to bring in a hundredfold harvest. The average yield was tenfold, and their ears must have perked up and they leaned in when Jesus told of such a bountiful harvest, hoping to hear where they could get such seed!

But as they leaned forward with interest, shushing children and neighbors sitting near them, Jesus yells out, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”  Then he sat down in the boat and instructed the disciples to row him to shore. The crowd must have been confused. They came to hear about the kingdom of God, and they were told a farming story- one about a seed they would never hold, and a bountiful harvest they would only see in their dreams!

Fortunately, the disciples save us all, as in their bewilderment one of them pipes up to ask, “What does this parable mean?” Jesus replies, “The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Even in their confusion, the small crowd in the boat would have recognized the reference to the prophet Isaiah, who preached to the nation of Israel, a people who would hear, but not listen to the word of God that came from his lips, and they would ultimately perish because of their hardness of heart- just like many of the people in the region Jesus had been preaching in!

Jesus explains the parable to his followers, noting that the seed is the word of God. The seeds on the path are those who have heard the gospel, but the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so they do not believe. These would be people who brush the gospel off like water off a duck’s back- it may penetrate to the heart, but they’re not going to let it get that far. The rocky soil is those who hear and welcome the word with joy, but they have no root. When troubles come, they depart. You may recognize this type of believer- they “dive in” to Christianity, but soon become disenchanted by the effort, and when things get hard, they are out. The seed that grows among thorns are those who hear the word, but are choked with worries, riches, and pleasure of life. These are people who lead double lives, talking a good game, but playing a bad one. Then there is the good soil- the ones who, having hear the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit. (100 times more than they began with.)

The disciples must have looked bewildered because Jesus changes illustrations: “No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.” For Jesus, it is common sense, because “gospel seed that takes root grows fruit.” “For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t me made known and come to light. Therefore, take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

The “seeds” of the gospel- the good news that Jesus, the son of God, died for our sins, was buried, and resurrected, are for everyone- but not everyone will believe the Gospel. The good soil, the person who takes ownership of the gospel message and is steadfast in living with gospel intentionality will bear fruit. This doesn’t mean that you will go around with a pocketful of tracts asking everyone if they know Jesus, but you will live with intentionality! Because “gospel seed that takes root bears fruit!” Sure, we will face rejection, but we shouldn’t give up because of it. Jesus, like the farmer casting seed upon the field, and wasn’t worried the loss of some of the seed, or the hard work of sowing, because he knew harvest time would come! His disciples must have had a check in their spirit, though, as he told them to watch their own lives to make sure they “good soil.” It should give each of us a check in our spirits.

Most people know the stories of Johnny Appleseed, and think of a somewhat goofy looking caricature from the Disney cartoon, throwing apple seeds right and left as he walked through the forests of North America. Most people don’t know that John Chapman travelled because he was a missionary, and he used his nursery business as a catalyst for missions. Unfortunately, John Chapman was a missionary for a heretical sect that called themselves The New Church. If John Chapman, who spent his life preaching a false gospel, could persevere, shouldn’t followers of Jesus be able to endure hardship for the gospel, looking forward to the harvest? Don’t be discouraged when people reject the message of our Savior, because “Gospel seed that takes root bears fruit!”—and there will be a harvest! Let me pray for us!
